"Leonardo da Vinci was the Michael Jordan of learning."..... ? That's a tough sentence to swallow! Although the quote is spot on perfect and this phrase resonates "Just as eating contrary to the inclination is injurious to the health" I'm having trouble putting a basketball player in the same league with a man who was a painter, philosopher, observer, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect.
I completely agree with your premise - if you don't want to learn - you won't learn. I hated math and all its silly numbers until one day I discovered I could manipulate numbers to do what I want, answer questions and explain phenomena.
i think when someone says "michael jordan", they mean the best of the best & since everyone in the world knows who michael jordan is; even when they never ever watched basketball like me, they use it.
there are millions of people that literally changed lives like edison than michael jordan but not everything has to be taken literally :)
Yep, exactly – I meant that in the "best in the world at x thing" sense. Michael Jordan's thing was basketball, da Vinci's was learning (in a meta-sense; as Jude pointed out, he mastered so much more than that!)
Loved this line: "I discovered I could manipulate numbers to do what I want, answer questions and explain phenomena."
That's exactly how I felt about programming and a whole bunch of once-"boring" topics that I've since found endlessly useful and, therefore, interesting.

Excellent think piece - once again!
